1000-Lb. Sisters fans have seen Tammy Slaton struggle with weight loss, but the TLC star lost a significant amount of weight following a medical incident in 2022.

“They’re just telling us that her lungs have given up, and like, her body is shutting down,” Amanda Halterman said as Tammy was placed into a medically induced coma.

After Tammy woke up, she was given a tracheotomy to have a breathing tube inserted in her throat. During her hospital stay, she lost about 115 pounds in 30 days, later reaching a milestone when she hit her goal weight to qualify for surgery during a February 2023 episode. She needed to weigh 550 pounds but was shocked to learn that she was 534.7 pounds.

Since completing the bariatric surgery, Tammy has flaunted her new figure, most recently next to a pool on a girls’ trip in April 2024.

Over the Years

Amy opened up about her feelings toward Tammy’s health journey. “I’m glad Tammy is finally getting the help she needs,” the mom of one told People amid her sister’s rehab stay. “I just wanted the best for all my siblings.”

Health Complications

Before her most recent medical scare, Tammy was hospitalized in November 2021 because of carbon monoxide poisoning, “which led to pneumonia, and I was septic,” she said in a TikTok video at the time.

“After I got off life support, they put a trach in, so, yeah. I’m trying to get used to that,” she explained on the social media app.

In June 2022, Tammy talked about the apparent criticism she received for drinking Sprite in a TikTok video.

“Doctor said one [soda] a day. Zero,” she said as she pointed to a Spite can that read, “zero sugar.”

A Positive Update

Tammy updated her TikTok followers on how she was doing in September 2022.

“I’m completely fine,” she clarified in response to a false report that she had passed away. “I’m on antibiotics because I have a bacterial growing in my [trachea]. So, I’m fine. I’m literally fine. Like, I feel great.”
