Fan of the Franchise? Secrets About ‘90 Day Fiance’ That’ll Make You Feel a Little Betrayed

With multiple seasons and numerous spinoffs, TLC‘s hit series 90 Day Fiancé became a cultural phenomenon some fans can’t resist. To truly stay on top of all the couples, whether they’re still together or if those crazy storylines are even true, you have to be on social media. By following their Instagram pages to interacting with overzealous fans in Facebook groups, these methods help viewers get real tea on the show. From reality TV fakery to how much the cast actually gets paid, we’re starting to see the series in a whole new light.

Before we take you down that winding road, let’s quickly look back at the show’s history. Interestingly, some networks were not interested in the concept when executive producer Matt Sharp pitched it for the first time.

“It was something like International Love, but that was not the title because that’s a terrible title, and we brought around the show. It was going to chronicle Americans who have met people online as they visited these international relationships,” Matt said on Kate Casey’s podcast, “Reality Life with Kate Casey.”

After thinking it over, Matt revealed they tried Bachelor Wars: Russia next as a possible title and still didn’t get the green light. It wasn’t until the executive producer pitched it to a friend at TLC that it was set in stone as 90 Day Fiancé.

After becoming the No. 1 show on the network, stars and friends of cast members began speaking out about their experience filming. Some weren’t pleased about the amount of money they were being paid, while others claimed it was partially scripted. It was also revealed some of the scenes are shot more than once.

“I am going to put the same clothes on and redo the scenes for the courthouse,” season 2 star Mohamed Jbali said in a video amid his divorce from Danielle Jbali (née Mullins).

Later on, David Toborowsky’s friend Chris Thienerman and his wife, Nikki Cooper, famously spoke out about some of the drama being forced for ratings.

“Absolutely part of it is, no question,” Chris said in a 2018 YouTube video. “Parts of it are real.” He also claimed they “they stretch the truth.”
