The actress is at peace with her estrangement from her biological father, Bill Hudson, calling such rifts “unfortunately quite common.” But she didn’t lack for fatherly love growing up, leaning on her mom Goldie Hawn’s longtime love, Kurt Russell. “I have a stepfather who stepped in and played a huge, huge part in sharing what it is to have a dependable father figure in our life,” the 44-year-old said of herself and brother Oliver. “But it doesn’t take away the fact that we didn’t know our dad.”

The Marvels star is cryptic about why she ditched her dad, Sylvain Desaulniers, as a teen. “When legally I didn’t have visitation with him anymore, I jumped on it,” the Oscar winner, 34, later said of the divorcé. “As a kid I tried to understand him and understand the situation, but he didn’t do himself any favors. The actress’ decades-long rift with her father, Jon Voight, heated up in early November after the 48-year-old called for a cease-fire in the Israel-Palestine conflict. “Palestinian and Israeli lives — and the lives of all people globally — matter equally,” the former U.N. Ambassador for Refugees posted. To which her estranged dad replied in a video that he was “disappointed” by her sentiment, blasting his daughter for having “no understanding of God’s honor.”

The Modern Family star accused her mom, Crystal Workman, of sexualizing her at a young age. “People thought I was 24 when I was 12,” the 25-year-old once said. “If there was going to be a nude scene when I was that age, my mother would have a thousand percent said yes.” At 14, she took her mom to court alleging abuse and was emancipated before her 18th birthday. “It has been sad for me,” she later reflected. “But at the same time, it’s been much better for me emotionally and physically.”
