Though the 56-year-old is descended from one of the Gilded Age’s most prominent families, the CNN host said he doesn’t believe in passing on huge amounts of money — much less his $50 million. “I’m not that interested in money, but I don’t intend to have some sort of pot of gold for my son,” the dad to Wyatt, 4, said in 2021, the year before he welcomed second son Sebastian. “I’ll go with what my parents said: ‘College will be paid for, and then you gotta get on it.'”

“Hey, you know, you’ve got to row your own boat,” the 71-year-old said about not leaving his $40 million fortune to kids Charlie, 8, and 6-year-old River (dad joke alert: River/boat!) with wife Emilie Livingston, 41. The Jurassic Park star thinks it’s essential for his offspring to find their own path. “It’s an important thing to teach kids,” he said. “I’m not going to do it for you. And you’re not going to want me to do it for you.”

My dad says, ‘When I die, you can expect that I’m going to die broke, and you’re going to be paying for the funeral,'” the 56-year-old, wed to Lori Fieri, said in 2023. “And I told my boys, ‘None of this that we’ve been … that I’ve been building are you going to get unless you come and take it from me.'”

The dad of six (from two marriages) has said he told his kids there won’t be much of his $300 million left after he’s gone. Adding that he has more than 100 people on his payroll and supports multiple charities, the “Fields of Gold” singer said his kids understand. “Obviously if they were in trouble, I would help them, but I’ve never really had to do that,” the 72-year-old explained. “They have the work ethic that makes them want to succeed on their own merit.”

The power couple, worth a reported $275 million, sparked debate when they said they would leave it all to charity rather than to Wyatt, 9, or 7-year-old Dmitri. But Ashton, 46, and Mila, 40, won’t completely forsake them. “If my kids want to start a business, and they have a good business plan, I’ll invest in it,” he said. “But they’re not getting trust [funds].”
