‘Bringing Up Bates’ Star Josie Bates Reveals She Suffered a Miscarriage: ‘Our Hearts Are Broken’

Josie Balka (née Bates) reveals she suffered a miscarriage. The Bringing Up Bates star and her husband, Kelton Balka, were expecting their second child in March 2021.

“Our hearts have been completely broken,” the 21-year-old wrote via Instagram. “I’ve never experienced the type of pain and loss that I’ve had these past weeks,” she said, adding, “There is an empty spot in our hearts and in our home.”

The couple — who share daughter Willow Kristy, 13 months, — were looking forward to giving her a sibling. “I added a charm to my necklace, next to Willow’s, to help us never forget the memories of how this little one made us feel and how much love and joy it brought to our family. We are grateful for the love and prayers from so many during this time.”

In the comments, the Bates family official Instagram account wrote they were “so proud” of Josie and Kelton’s “perspective.” They explained, “In spite of the pain and the grief, you recognize that this precious life is still a blessing and that God has a wonderful plan, even in the midst of sorrow.” Friend Joy-Anna Duggar also showed support, writing, “Oh my goodness, I’m so sorry for your loss!” while Anna Duggar said, “Praying for you during this difficult time. Looking forward to meeting your little one in heaven someday!”

Josie and Kelton, 25, tied the knot in October 2018 during a romantic outdoor ceremony in Tennessee. In Touch confirmed their first child was on the way the following February.
