Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes’ Relationship Timeline: From Movie Costars to Parents

2011

Ryan and Eva met while filming The Place Beyond the Pines, where they played lovers who shared a child.

The couple were first spotted on a date at the actor’s beloved Disneyland on September 7 of that year, holding hands and showing off other PDA. By Thanksgiving, Ryan flew to Paris ​to join Eva, as she was shooting a movie. The pair were spotted having romantic dinners, as well as visiting some of the city’s famous sites.

2012

The couple rang in the new year with a kiss at Manhattan’s Bowery Hotel. In September 2012, they posed together alongside the rest of The Place Beyond the Pines cast at the Toronto Film Festival.

“That’s literally me going, ‘I’m not in love with him. What? I’m not in love.’ ‘Cause we were trying to be very professional,” Eva later told Kelly Clarkson on her daytime talk show about how the pair made sure to not give off any affectionate vibes.

2014

Eva and Ryan welcomed their first child, daughter Esmeralda Amada, on September 12, after keeping her pregnancy a secret.

“I mean, it’s true that I wasn’t thinking about kids before I met her, but after I met Eva, I realized that I just didn’t want to have kids without her,” Ryan told GQ in May 2023. “And there were moments on The Place Beyond the Pines where we were pretending to be a family, and I didn’t really want it to be pretend anymore. I realized that this would be a life I would be really lucky to have.”

2016

The couple welcomed their second daughter, Amada Lee, on April 29. Eva nearly managed to have another secret pregnancy, but paparazzi photos of her emerged showing a large baby bump while going to a doctor’s appointment that revealed the pair was expecting their second child together.

2017

Ryan called Eva “my lady” in a rare public comment about his significant other while attending the Golden Globe Awards, where he won Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical for La La Land.

“She’s at home with our girls,” the Canada native told Entertainment Tonight on the red carpet about Eva’s whereabouts on his big night.

In his acceptance speech, Ryan gushed, “While I was singing and dancing and playing piano … my lady was raising our daughter, pregnant with our second and trying to help her brother with his battle with cancer.” Eva’s older brother, Juan Carlos Mendes, died from the disease at the age of 53 in April 2016, and Ryan dedicated his win to her late sibling.

2020

Eva gushed about Ryan’s cooking skills via Instagram in February. “Ryan is an amazing chef AND baker,” she told a commenter adding, “I’m not sure that what I do is cooking. It’s more like steaming veggies and juicing and making rice.”

The Out of Time actress shared a photo in October running along the beach, at first joking she took a morning jog before saying, “No I didn’t.” She added, “This picture was taken at least 15 years ago. Haven’t seen a beach this year. Haven’t been on a run this year.”

After a follower told Eva, “You need to tell Ryan to get you out more,” she responded to the comment, “No thank you, I’m good. Rather be home with my man than anywhere else in the world.”

2022

Eva sparked marriage rumors after proudly showing off a tattoo reading “de Gosling” on her inner wrist in a November 15 Instagram post. In Spanish, it translated into “of Gosling” and some interpreted it as “Mrs. Gosling.”

The Miami, Florida, native then seemed to confirm the couple tied the knot by calling Ryan her “husband” during an interview several days later.

“Everyone is so welcoming here and my husband Ryan is here, and we are having the best time,” she said during an appearance on Australia’s Channel Nine’s Today on November 18, as the family relocated down under while Ryan filmed the Fall Guy.

Eva revealed her “de Gosling” tattoo was not new ink during an interview on Australia’s The Kyle and Jackie O Show, telling the hosts, “I got it years ago, but I posted a picture and I’ve gotten a lot of funny questions,” adding she liked that her love life remained “mysterious.”

2023

Fans got a thrill when Eva shared a scene featuring her with Ryan from The Place Beyond the Pines on April 6. She wrote in the caption, “Magic is real. We did not meet on set. The magic started way before but here’s a little magic captured on camera. Gracias to the increíble director Derek Cianfrance.”

When a fan asked why the pair don’t walk red carpets anymore, Eva responded, “We don’t do those things together,” as she wasn’t comfortable exposing their “very private life” together but was OK with posting the video since it was already out there. “I’m still dying to do another movie with him though…” she added along with a red heart emoji.

2024

“I for one have been so lucky. Most importantly, I got to meet the girl of my dreams, Eva Mendes, and have two dream children,” Ryan gushed while accepting an award at the Santa Barbara Film Festival in January. “I dreamed of one day making movies, and now, movies have made my life a dream.”

Eva shared the sentiment towards her man by posting a hilarious video of him looking stunned at the Critics’ Choice Awards when his “I’m Just Ken” from the Barbie movie won best song at the ceremony. “I LOVE HIM!!!!” she wrote in the caption.

While the couple still didn’t make any red carpet appearances together during Ryan’s big awards season, Eva was there at the Oscars ahead of his epic “I’m Just Ken” performance. She shared a photo from outside his dressing room in a casual denim outfit with the caption, “Always by my man.” Eva later posted a picture in Ryan’s pink jacket he wore onstage, writing, “You took Ken all the way to the Oscar’s, RG. Now come home, we need to put the kids to bed.”
