Selena Gomez’s ‘Fling’ With The Weeknd Was ‘Short-Lived’ and ‘Not Deep Enough’ to Inspire Her New Song
There’s been a lot of talk around Selena Gomez’s new song “Lose You to Love Me,” and all signs point to Justin Bieber as the 27-year-old’s muse. Although, a few have speculated that the track might have been inspired by Selena’s brief fling with The Weeknd. However, sources say that their relationship didn’t have great depth to spark such a heartfelt tune.
“Although the song ‘Lose You to Love Me’ was cowritten and a collaboration, Selena was very involved in writing and creating it, and the song is obviously about Justin,” an insider told Us Weekly. “Her fling with The Weeknd did not inspire the song — their relationship was much more short-lived and not deep enough to inspire it.”
Another source echoed that although the song may be about the now-married man, there is a more important message to be heard behind the lyrics. “The song was inspired by Selena’s breakup from Justin, but it would be incorrect to say it’s totally about Justin,” the source said, adding, “It’s actually about finally being able to love yourself and moving on from a toxic relationship.”
While there has been chatter on the web that Selena’s song throws shade at Justin, 25, and his wife Hailey Baldwin, that was not the songstress’ intention, a source told In Touch exclusively. “Selena didn’t mean for the song to be shady, but songwriting to her is part of her therapy. So, she had to put it down on paper and release it,” the insider explained. “That’s part of her process, and it works for her.”
“Meanwhile, Justin and Hailey hope this is the last song she has about her ex. They just want Selena to leave them alone,” the source added.
With one look at the lyrics, It’s clear why fans think the song points fingers at the newlyweds. “I gave my all and they all know it/You turned me down and now it’s showing/In two months, you replaced us/Like it was easy/Made me think I deserved it/In the thick of healing, yeah,” the song reads. Justin and Selena went their separate ways in March 2018, and by June, he was engaged to the blonde beauty, 22. Pretty obvious, if you ask us.
