National Selena Quintanilla Pérez Day? Lawmaker Proposes Holiday to Honor Late Tejano Music Star

Late Tejano music star Selena Quintanilla Pérez may soon have her very own holiday. A Texas lawmaker introduced a bill on Tuesday, February 26, that would honor the singer with an official day.

Texas Rep. Ana-Maria Ramos filed the legislation to designate April 16 — the musician’s birthday — as “Selena Quintanilla Pérez Day, in memory of the contributions to Tejano music of Selena Quintanilla Pérez, an award-winning singer and recording artist.”

Selena would have turned 47 years old this year but her life was tragically cut short when she was killed by Yolanda Saldivar. The young star was shot in the shoulder at a Days Inn hotel in Corpus Christi, TX after she and her family caught Yolanda — who served as president of Selena’s fan club and also managed her boutiques — embezzling money. According to The New York Times, on that day at the Days Inn, the “Dreaming of You” songstress confronted her over financial documents.

Luckily, the songstress’ legacy lives on. In December 2018, Netflix revealed they’re greenlighting a scripted series that retells her life story. “With this series, viewers will finally get the full history of Selena, our family, and the impact she has had on all of our lives,” Selena’s sister, Suzette Quintanilla, said at the time. The streaming service revealed that Selena: The Series was “developed alongside, and will be executive produced by, The Quintanilla family.”

Selena also received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2017. Prior to the ceremony, Selena’s Official Instagram page posted a photo of Suzette helping to prepare the star.

“What a moment! Suzette, sharing in the making of her sister’s star,” the caption read. “‘They don’t give this honor to everyone, so I’m beyond honored … to be able to participate in the making of it, priceless.'”

Today, the Yolanda, now 58, is still sitting behind bars but swears she has a “clear conscience” because the shooting was an “accident.”
